NJCU Baseball Powers Past Alvernia in Offensive Showcase

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University (NJCU) baseball team delivered a dominant offensive performance on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Alvernia University 18-13 at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. The Gothic Knights erupted for a season-high 18 runs on 21 hits to secure their seventh win of the year.

NJCU (7-3-1) was powered by Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J./Ewing), who posted a career day, going 4-for-5 with five RBI. Justin Moreno (Brooklyn, N.Y./Trenton Catholic) matched Yarson with a 4-for-5 performance, driving in four runs, including a two-run home run. Enrique Beltra (Monroe, N.J./Ranney) added four hits and two RBI. Danny Olear (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) (2-0) earned the win, tossing two innings with one hit allowed. Alvernia (7-9) was led by Nelson, who finished with three hits, and Buckley, who added two RBI.

After a scoreless first inning, NJCU broke through in the bottom of the second. Brandon Piacenza (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) led off with a double to center field, setting the stage for Moreno, who followed with an RBI double to put the Gothic Knights on the board.

Alvernia answered with a run in the top of the third before NJCU exploded for six runs in the bottom half. Piacenza singled to drive in the first run, followed by an RBI double from Beltra. Yarson delivered a two-RBI double to left field, and Moreno capped the inning with a two-run homer, pushing the Gothic Knights' lead to 7-1.

The Golden Wolves responded with two runs in the fourth inning, but NJCU countered with four runs of their own. Arian Lunar (Caracas, Venezuela/Elizabeth) scored on an error before Piacenza blasted his first home run of the season, a two-run shot. Yarson added an RBI double to right-center, giving NJCU an 11-3 advantage.

Alvernia cut into the lead with four runs in the fifth, but NJCU's offense remained relentless. The Gothic Knights plated seven runs combined in the sixth and seventh innings to extend the margin. Despite six late runs by the Golden Wolves, NJCU's early offensive explosion was enough to seal the victory.
