NJCU Softball Off to 2nd Best Start in Program History With Sweep of Hunter

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Gothic Knights softball squad swept Hunter College, 12-4, 9-1, on Tuesday, March 25 at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex in a non-conference doubleheader. The win, the 6th straight against Hunter, improves the Gothic Knights to 7-7 all-time against the Hawks. The 12-4 start matches one of the Gothic Knights' best starts (12-4, 1999) bested only by their 15-2-1 start in 1998.

Game 1: NJCU 12, Hunter 4 (6 inn.)

NJCU (11-2) scattered 12 hits led by a quad of Gothic Knights while Hunter (5-8) plated four runs on three hits. Hunter recorded five errors in the game aiding NJCU's late rally. Meaghan Doyle (Hardwick, Mass./Quabbin Regional) paced the team going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI while Alonah Olden (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George), Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech), and Cheyenn Fulton (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) all added two hits. In the circle, Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) (5-2) pitched all six innings and tallied one strikeout with two earned runs.

Borza set the tone early, retiring Hunter in order in the top of the first. NJCU wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom half. Olden reached on a bunt single, advanced to second on an Emma Hanlon (Highland, N.Y./Highland) groundout, and scored when Doyle ripped an RBI double to left field to give NJCU a 1-0 lead.

Hunter responded with four runs in the top of the second, capitalizing on two Gothic Knight errors to take a 4-1 lead. However, NJCU answered immediately, matching the Hawks with four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Cheyenn Fulton (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) started the rally with an infield single before Olden drove her home with a single up the middle. Hanlon followed with a sacrifice fly, and Doyle added to her stat line with an RBI single to right-center. Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) capped the inning with an infield single, bringing home Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) to regain the lead at 5-4.

Borza found her rhythm after the second inning, retiring 12 consecutive batters to keep Hunter off the board for the remainder of the game.

The Gothic Knights blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth, erupting for seven runs to invoke the mercy rule. NJCU capitalized on a combination of timely hitting and defensive miscues by Hunter to close out the contest in commanding fashion.

Game 2: NJCU 9, Hunter 1 (6 inn.)

NJCU (12-4) kept its bats hot, tallying 11 hits to just five for Hunter (5-9). Natalie Rosales (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy), finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Emma Growchowski (2-for-4, 1 RBI) and Doyle (2-for-2, 1 RBI) added two hits. Jordan Mendolla (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) led the team with 3 RBI while Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) (4-0) tossed one strikeout and allowed just one earned run on five hits.

NJCU was first to the scoreboard in the bottom of the 3rd when Fulton hit a stand-up triple to right field before taking home via a throwing error. Hunter leveled the game at one in the top of the 4th when they scattered two hits, one of which, was an infield RBI single.

The Gothic Knights, much like game one, used one inning to propel them to the finish line, ending the game early for the fourth time this season. Tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the 6th, NJCU rifled off eight runs sparked by a 3 RBI triple from Mendolla. The Gothic Knights did most of their damage with two outs, plating four runs that began with an RBI by Castro.
