Career Outing by Villanueva Powers NJCU to Split With Centenary

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ - Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) had a career day as the New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball team split with Centenary, 11-5 and 14-5 on Thursday, March 27.

Game 1: Centenary 11, NJCU 5

Of NJCU's (12-5) eight hits in game one, Alonah Olden (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) and Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) recorded six of them with both going 3-for-4 from the dish. Villanueva drove in four of the five runs while Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) brought in the other. In the circle, Elyze Lopez (Reseda, Calif./John F. Kennedy) (2-3) pitched 1.1 innings and allowed eight earned runs on eight hits before giving way to Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport). Centenary (2-12) used 12 hits to plate its 11 runs led by Giberson (3-for-4, 2 RBI).

Villanueva collected NJCU's first RBI of the game in the first inning with a single to plate Olden who hit a lead-off single. Centenary answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame, using four hits and an error to do so. The Cyclones nearly doubled their tally in the following inning, scoring four runs to extend their lead to 9-1.

The scoring continued for Centenary in the 3rd when they plated another run before going dormant in the 4th inning. NJCU got its offense going in the 5th when Olden, Emma Hanlon (Highland, N.Y./Highland), and Meaghan Doyle (Hardwick, Mass./Quabbin Regional) all reached in order, setting the stage for Villanueva to play the hero. Villanueva hit a bases-clearing single to cut the lead down to 11-4. Castro rounded out the inning with a sacrifice fly RBI to bring NJCU within six. Unfortunately for the Gothic Knights, that's where their offense ended as Centenary held on to secure its second win of the season.

Game 2: NJCU 14, Centenary 5

Villanueva kept her bat red-hot in game two and recorded a career outing, tallying four hits and 4 RBIs, both career highs. NJCU (13-5) scattered 18 hits to score 14 runs. Emma Hanlon (Highland, N.Y./Highland) and Jordan Mendolla (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) added three hits each while Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) (5-0) pitched a complete game with three strikeouts. Centenary (2-12) recorded 10 hits in the loss with four Cyclones tallying two hits each.

The Gothic Knights scored three runs in the top of the 1st behind a 2 RBI triple by Villanueva. Centenary regained the lead with a four-run inning, giving them a one-run lead. Mendolla tied the game with an RBI double in the 2nd before NJCU exploded for six runs in the 3rd highlighted by a 2 RBI double from Villanueva.

Centenary was held to one run for the remaining six innings while NJCU tallied four over the final two innings to close out the game.
