Softball Splits With Rutgers-Camden in NJAC Opener

CAMDEN, NJ - The New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball split with Rutgers University-Camden for the second straight season this afternoon,  6-7 (8 inn.) and 8-4. The split moves NJCU's all-time record against Rutgers-Camden to 5-32, with three of the five wins coming in the last four seasons under head coach Ashley Martinez.

Game 1: Rutgers-Camden 7, NJCU 6 (8 inn.)

NJCU (13-6, 0-1) registered eight hits and tallied just one error in the field in the extra innings loss to the Scarlet Raptors. Meaghan Doyle (Hardwick, Mass./Quabbin Regional) led the Gothic Knights at the plate, going 2-for-4 while Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) finished 1-for-2 with 2 RBI. In the circle, Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) (5-3) pitched all eight innings and allowed five earned runs on 13 hits. Rutgers-Camden (3-13, 1-0) scattered 13 hits led by Kendall Lafferty who finished 4-for-4 with 2 RBI.

The Gothic Knights opened scoring in the first inning of play with two outs to their name. In the three-hole, Doyle picked up the first hit of the game for NJCU and was eventually brought home when Cheyenn Fulton (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) was walked to overload the bases. NJCU doubled its tally in the second via an RBI single from Emma Hanlon (Highland, N.Y./Highland) to score Jordan Mendolla (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic)

NJCU's scoring continued into the third after Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) hit a ground-rule double to plate Villanueva. The Scarlet Raptors finally ended their scoring drought with two runs in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead down to one, 3-2. Villanueva capped a two-run inning with a 2 RBI single to right center. The Gothic Knights nearly tallied three runs in the inning, however, Hanlon was tossed out at the plate to end the inning.

Rutgers-Camden knotted the game in the bottom of the fifth with three runs which would eventually force the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, the Gothic Knights capitalized on an error to plate their run. Rutgers-Camden's bats caught fire in the bottom of the eighth as they tallied three straight hits to drive in two runs to secure the win with a walk-off single.

Game 2: NJCU 8, Rutgers-Camden 4

NJCU (14-6, 1-1) rebounded in game two and used 11 hits to score eight runs. Hanlon, Doyle, and Mendolla paced the Gothic Knights with two hits each with Doyle and Emma Grochowski (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) leading the way with 2 RBI each. Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) (6-0) remained perfect on the season behind a complete game where she allowed just four earned runs. Rutgers-Camden (3-14, 1-1) tallied two errors in the game and recorded 11 hits led by Kendall Lafferty once again.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Rutgers-Camden took an early 2-0 lead before the Gothic Knights responded with three in the second. Alonah Olden (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) brought in the first run via a sacrifice fly before Doyle batted home Grochowski and Natalie Rosales (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy). The Scarlet Raptors tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third before two scoreless innings ensued.

Rutgers-Camden took a brief lead in the fifth before NJCU scored a run in the next inning to tie it back up. NJCU exploded for four runs in the top of the seventh to jump ahead of the Scarlet Raptors. The Gothic Knights blanked Rutgers-Camden in the final frame to hold onto the win.
