NJCU Softball Drops NJAC Twinbill to Kean

UNION, NJ - For the first time this season, the New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball team was blanked in both games of a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) clash against Kean University, 7-0, 9-0.

Game 1: Kean 7, NJCU 0

NJCU (14-7, 1-2) tallied just one hit in the loss and committed an error. Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) (5-4) hurled all six innings for the Gothic Knights and struck out three batters with five earned runs. Natalie Rosales (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy) secured the lone hit for the Gothic Knights, finishing 1-for-2 on the day. Kean (10-13, 1-2) scattered eight hits in the win, led by Maya Thompson who finished 3-for-4 with two RBI.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the first inning, using a wild pitch to put the first tally on the board. The inning was extended with an error, allowing the Cougars to plate two more runs to take an early 3-0 lead. In the very next inning, the Cougars used two hits to add two more runs to increase their lead to 5-0.

Three scoreless innings filled the gap before the Cougars secured two more runs to close out the game with a 7-0 win.

Game 2: Kean 9, NJCU 0 (5 inn.)

NJCU (14-8, 1-3) tallied two hits in game two while Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) (6-1) suffered her first loss of the season. Offensively, the Gothic Knights' two hits came from Alonah Olden (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George). Kean (11-13, 2-2) used eight hits to score 9 runs in game two led by Samantha Raymond (2-for-2).

Once again, the Cougars plated three runs in the opening inning, led by a two-RBI triple. Kean added four runs in the bottom of the third, stretching its lead out to 7-0 before securing two in the fourth to evoke the run rule to end the game in five innings.
