NJCU Baseball Opens Ripken Experience with Record-Breaking Win Over Penn State Schuylkill

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The New Jersey City University baseball team opened play at the Ripken Experience in dominant fashion, defeating Penn State Schuylkill 15-6 on Saturday. The Gothic Knights made history in the victory, recording 17 stolen bases, the sixth-most in NCAA Division III history and a new NJCU program record.

NJCU (2-1-1) tallied 13 hits while playing error-free baseball, while PSU-S (1-4) collected 14 hits but committed one defensive miscue. Danny Olear (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) (1-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing 1.2 innings with one strikeout. Enrique Beltra (Monroe, N.J./Ranney) led the offensive charge, going 3-for-4 with five runs scored and an RBI, while Brandon Piacenza (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) paced the team with three RBIs, finishing 2-for-7 at the plate. Zimmerman and Adams led PSU-S with three hits apiece.

Penn State Schuylkill struck first, plating four runs in the opening three innings. NJCU responded in the fourth with a four-run outburst to tie the game. Beltra sparked the rally with a solo home run, followed by a single from Mike Novak (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial). The Gothic Knights' offense caught fire as Piacenza delivered an RBI single, and Arian Lunar (Caracas, Venezuela/Elizabeth) followed with a two-RBI single.

The Lions briefly regained the lead with a run in the bottom half of the fourth, but NJCU answered immediately in the fifth. Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Novak followed with an RBI single to put the Gothic Knights in front for good.

After a scoreless sixth inning, NJCU's offense exploded down the stretch, scoring nine runs over the final three frames to seal the commanding victory.
