Allo & Piacenza Surge NJCU Past Rutgers-Newark, 9-2

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The New Jersey City University baseball team ended its 10-game losing skid with a 9-2 win over New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival, Rutgers-Newark.

NJCU (10-14-1, 1-6) was led by Phil Kramer (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) (2-2) on the bump. The lefty pitcher hurled eight innings and tallied seven strikeouts while allowing just four hits and two earned runs. Garrett Allo (Monroe, N.J./East Brunswick Tech) led the Gothic Knights at the dish, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI while Justin Moreno (Brooklyn, N.Y./Trenton Catholic) and Collin Elam (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) added two hits each. Rutgers-Newark (11-15, 3-4) used four hits to score two runs led by Matt Torreto (2-for-4).

The Gothic Knights opened their scoring ledger in the bottom of the frame with a two-out solo homer by Allo. Rutgers-Newark tied it at one two innings later, using a sacrifice fly by Gilroy Prial to plate Dan Fedorco. NJCU responded in the bottom of the third, with four runs highlighted by a 2 RBI homer to left field by Brandon Piacenza (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield)

Both defenses tightened up the following two innings until NJCU tallied another run in the sixth. Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) doubled to centerfield and was quickly brought home by a Justin Moreno (Brooklyn, N.Y./Trenton Catholic) double to left center to increase NJCU's lead to 6-1. With the lead in hand, NJCU brought in three more runs over the final two innings while Rutgers-Newark tried to rally back, but scored just one run in the final inning.
