Baseball Falls to Rutgers-Newark in Extra Innings

NEWARK, NJ - The New Jersey City University baseball team suffered a 10th-inning loss to Rutgers-Newark on Friday, April 11 at Weequahic Park. The loss snaps a three-game win streak the Gothic Knights held over the Scarlet Raiders.

NJCU (10-15-1, 1-7) scattered 9 hits and tallied three errors in the loss. Garrett Allo (Monroe, N.J./East Brunswick Tech) led the way, going 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and two walks. Jeremy Ricourt (Perth Amboy, N.J./JFK Memorial) ended the game with two hits and 2 RBI. Rutgers-Newark (12-16, 4-4) was led by Eric Recchia who finished 3-for-5 while Devin Rojas also tallied three hits but paced the team with 2 RBI.

John Abrahamsen (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) plated the game's first run, using a sacrifice fly to score Enrique Beltra (Monroe, N.J./Ranney) who walked earlier in the inning. The Gothic Knights increased their lead to 4-0 with three runs in the second. Ricourt doubled to left field to begin the scoring spree before Beltra walked again to set up Allo for a 2 RBI triple to right center. After adding another marker on the board in the fourth, Rutgers-Newark opened its scoring ledger in the bottom of the frame. The Scarlet Raiders tallied three runs behind three hits.

The Gothic Knights kept scoring, recording their seventh run in the last five innings. NJCU capitalized on a pair of errors by the Scarlet Raiders allowing Collin Elam (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) and Ricourt to drive in runs. Rutgers-Newark tallied another run in the bottom to cut the lead down to three after using an error to add another tally. NJCU's offense stalled over the final five innings as Rutgers-Newark picked up the win via a walk-off walk.
