Defensive Woes Cost NJCU Softball in Doubleheader Sweep

Abby Castro recorded 100th career hit in game one

WAYNE, NJ - The New Jersey City University softball team suffered a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) losses to William Paterson this afternoon, 15-9 and 6-5.

Game 1: William Paterson 15, NJCU 9

NJCU (14-11, 1-6) scattered 12 hits and tallied 9 runs in the loss. Defensively, NJCU recorded eight errors while William Paterson (10-11, 3-4) tallied just two. Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) secured her 100th career hit in game one, going 3-for-4 from the plate with 2 RBI while Emily Cammarata (Matawan , N.J./Matawan Regional), Meaghan Doyle (Hardwick, Mass./Quabbin Regional), and Elyze Lopez (Reseda, Calif./John F. Kennedy) all finished with two hits. For the Pioneers, it was Kylie Bythrow who paced the team with three hits.

The Gothic Knights took an early 1-0 lead via an RBI walk by Cheyenn Fulton (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic). Errors plagued the second inning for NJCU as they tallied two to allow the Pioneers to plate seven runs to take a 7-1 lead. NJCU found its way back on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when Lopez singled to center field to score Fulton for the second time after she doubled to left field.

The rally continued for the Gothic Knights in the fifth inning as they scored four runs to cut the deficit down to just one run. Alonah Olden (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) reached via an error to start the rally and was quickly brought home by a Doyle triple which also scored Cammarata. Castro wouldn't leave Doyle on the pillows for long with an RBI single to third base.

NJCU jumped in front in the sixth behind two runs. Doyle singled up the middle and advanced to second after Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) singled to left center. Castro's 100th career hit came in clutch as it drove in the game-tying run to set up Fulton for the go-ahead run to close out the inning.

The game unraveled for the Gothic Knights in the bottom of the sixth as they tallied five errors which allowed William Paterson to plate eight runs and put the game out of reach for NJCU.

Game 2: William Paterson 6, NJCU 5

NJCU (14-12, 1-7) recorded 10 hits, behind 3-of-4 hitting by Doyle and three errors in game two. Castro and Jordan Mendolla (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) each added two hits with Castro bringing in a run. William Paterson (11-11, 4-4) used eight hits to tally six runs and played clean softball in the field. Hailey Backo paced the team with two hits and 3 RBI while Lilah Guthy allowed 10 hits and five earned runs with one strikeout.

Once again it was NJCU who jumped out to an early lead. Fulton reached safely on a fielder's choice before advancing on a passed ball. Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) helped her own cause with an RBI double to right field, to score Fulton and put NJCU ahead, 1-0.

After two scoreless innings, William Paterson tallied its first pair of runs in the game to take a 2-1 lead. NJCU responded the following inning via an infield single by Castro to score Doyle.  The Gothic Knights kept their foot on the gas and added three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead.

William Paterson used five hits in the final inning to record a walk-off 3 RBI double to close out the game and steal the win from the Gothic Knights.
