NJCU Softball Splits NJAC Doubleheader With Rutgers-Newark

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The New Jersey City University softball team split with New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rivals Rutgers-Newark, 7-4 and 5-2 at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex on Monday, April 14.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 7, NJCU 4

NJCU (11-16, 1-8) tallied three errors in the loss and scattered seven hits led by Alonah Olden (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) (2-for-4) and Cheyenn Fulton (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) (2-for-4). Rutgers-Newark (14-13, 1-8) scattered 9 hits in the win behind a two-hit 2 RBI game from Josi Morales.

The loss marks the first time in the last four outings that the Gothic Knights fell to Rutgers-Newark. NJCU was first on board after Jordan Mendolla (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) scored Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) with a sacrifice fly. The Gothic Knights did not remain in the lead for long as errors reared their ugly heads once again. Rutgers-Newark capitalized on two errors to score three runs and take a 3-1 lead highlighted by an RBI single from Morales.

A lead off double by Villanueva and quickly came home when Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) reached on an error allowing Villanueva to race home for a run. Rutgers-Newark answered with three runs to expand its lead to 6-2 before adding another run in the following inning to secure their first NJAC win of the season.

Game 2: NJCU 5, Rutgers-Newark 2

NJCU (15-13, 2-8) returned to the win column in game two after plating five runs behind 9 hits. Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) and Jordan Mendolla (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) paced the team with two hits each while Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) (7-3) helped her own cause with a hit and 3 RBI. Rutgers-Newark (11-17, 1-9) was held to two runs despite leading the game with 10 hits.

Rutgers-Newark opened the game with a run after NJCU tallied their lone error of the game. NJCU responded in the bottom of the frame when an error allowed Fulton to eventually cross home. Martin tallied the first of her three RBI with an infield ground out to jump ahead, 2-1. The Scarlet Raiders ended the two-inning scoring drought with a run in the top of the fifth to knot the game up at two.

NJCU's offense opened up in the sixth, which led to the Gothic Knights scoring three runs. Castro plated the go-ahead run with an RBI double to right center before Martin hit a 2 RBI double to left field to score both Elyze Lopez (Reseda, Calif./John F. Kennedy) and Emma Hanlon (Highland, N.Y./Highland). Rutgers-Newark put two runners on the bases in the top of the seventh, however, the Gothic Knights forced a pop up to end the inning and split with Rutgers-Newark.
