Castro Homers in NJAC Loss to Montclair

MONTCLAIR, N.J. - The New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball team dropped a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) games to Montclair University on Tuesday, April 15.

Game 1: Montclair 8, NJCU 0 (5 inn.)

NJCU (15-14, 2-9) tallied four hits, two of which came from Cheyenn Fulton (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) (2-for-2). Meaghan Doyle (Hardwick, Mass./Quabbin Regional) (1-for-2) and Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) (1-for-1) added the other hits. Montclair (21-10, 7-4) used 10 hits to plate eight runs and played clean softball in the field while NJCU tallied an error. Hester paced the team with two hits and 3 RBI.

The Gothic Knights stranded two runners in the top of the first before blanking the Red Hawks in the bottom of the frame. The game remained scoreless after both offenses remained stagnant in the second, however, Montclair's offense came alive in the third. Montclair plated five runs in the third behind five hits and one error.

NJCU had a promising start to the four with a lead-off double by Villanueva, however, a double play nullified the start. Fulton brought life back to the Gothic Knights with a single but the rally came up short when Mendolla flew out. Montclair scored three more runs in the fifth to enact the mercy rule and end the game in five innings.

Game 2: Montclair 9, NJCU 5

NJCU's (15-15, 2-10) offense came alive in the second game of the day as they recorded 10 hits and plated five runs. Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) (5-8) helped her own cause with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) (2-for-4, 3 RBI) led the charge with a team-high 3 RBI while Villanueva finished with two hits and 2 RBI. Montclair (22-10, 8-4) was led in game two by Mullen who finished 3-for-3 with 2 RBI.

Hester hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first to open the scoring for the Red Hawks. Montclair tallied another pair of runs in the third to extend its lead to 3-0. In the fifth, the Gothic Knights exploded for five runs on three hits. Villanueva hit a 2 RBI double, scoring Emily Cammarata (Matawan , N.J./Matawan Regional) and Alonah Olden (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George). The scoring for NJCU didn't end there as Castro capped the inning with a 3 RBI homer to jump ahead of the Red Hawks.

NJCU's lead wouldn't last long as Montclair responded in the bottom of the frame with three runs to regain the lead, 6-5. The Red Hawks added three more runs in the next inning to secure the NJAC win at home.
