NJCU Softball Drops NJAC Doubleheader at TCNJ

EWING, N.J. - The New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball team dropped its fourth straight with a pair of losses to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponents, The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), 5-0, 11-5.

Game 1: TCNJ 5, NJCU 0

NJCU (15-16, 2-11) was held to three hits in the loss and recorded an error while TCNJ (18-13, 10-3) tallied seven hits and five runs. NJCU's three hits came from Meaghan Doyle (Hardwick, Mass./Quabbin Regional), Alonah Olden (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George), and Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech). Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) (7-5) hurled 70 pitches in 5.1 innings and allowed five earned runs on seven hits. TCNJ was led by Sara Vincent who finished 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.

Olden led the Gothic Knights with a lead-off single in the first inning before being stranded on the base path. TCNJ tallied its first run of the game in the bottom of the first behind a Vincent RBI single through the left side. NJCU recorded its second hit of the game in the fourth when Doyle doubled to left center only to be left on the bases much like Olden.

TCNJ opened the floodgates in the sixth when they plated four runs, using four hits and an NJCU to do so. Castro gave NJCU hope with a single in the seventh, however, two outs would follow to end the game.

Game 2: TCNJ 11, NJCU 5

NJCU (15-17, 2-12) found its offense in game two and plated five runs with eight hits, however, they recorded two errors in the field. Castro's bat remained hot in game two as she led the team, going 2-for-4 with 3 RBI while Doyle and Cheyenn Fulton (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) each added two hits. TCNJ (19-13, 11-3) also had an uptick in its offensive output, tallying 13 hits and 11 runs. Kaci Neveling was a perfect 4-for-4 from the dish while Mckayla Yard finished with a team-high 3 RBI.

TCNJ opened the game with a statement, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. NJCU responded in the third with three runs to knot the game at three. Casto highlighted the inning with a 2 RBI single to center field to give the Gothic Knights the runs needed to put pressure on the Lions.

NJCU followed up with two more runs in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead over TCNJ. The Gothic Knights capitalized on an error and used four hits to score the pair of runs, one from Elyze Lopez (Reseda, Calif./John F. Kennedy) and another from Castro. The Lions wasted no time tying the game as they scored two in the fifth before exploding for six runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach for the Gothic Knights.
