Softball Falls to Ramapo in NJAC Twinbill

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The New Jersey City University softball team dropped two New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) games to Ramapo College on Tuesday, April 22.

Game 1: Ramapo 9, NJCU 0

NJCU (15-18, 2-13) tallied five hits and four errors in game one against the Roadrunners. Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) (5-9) hurled a complete game, 134 pitches, with three strikeouts and four earned runs. Ramapo (25-7, 9-6) scattered 17 hits and 9 runs led by Gargiulo's three hits.

Ramapo opened the scoring in the second inning, plating four runs on four hits, capitalizing on an error by the Gothic Knights. They followed that up with three runs in the third, using two errors to do so. NJCU broke up the no-hitter in the bottom of the fourth when Cheyenn Fulton (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) singled to the shortstop but was stranded on the bases.

That hit brought life to the Gothic Knights as Jaelynn Barrios (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) hit a leadoff single to center field before Jordan Mendolla (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) walked to put two runners on. NJCU failed to keep the rally going as Alonah Olden (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) grounded out to end the inning. The errors continued for the Gothic Knights in the seventh which allowed the Roadrunners to score two more runs to extend their lead to 9-0.

Game 2: Ramapo 9, NJCU 0 (5 inn.)

NJCU (15-19, 2-14) was held to one hit in game two which came off of the bat of Emma Hanlon (Highland, N.Y./Highland). Ramapo (26-7, 10-6) kept its bats hot and secured 14 hits and 9 runs while playing clean softball in the field. Rygiel led the Roadrunners with three hits and 2 RBI while Stefanski (9-2) pitched a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts.

Ramapo scattered three runs across the first four innings before opening the floodgates in the top of the fifth. In the fifth, they plated six runs on six hits while an error kept the inning alive. NJCU's lone hit of the game came in the first inning but was quickly nullified by a double play.
