Villanueva Joins 100-Hit Club in Sweep of Lehman

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) joined the 100-hit club on Thursday, April 24 with a pair of wins over Lehman College, 10-2, 11-6, at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.

Game 1: NJCU 10, Lehman 2 (6 inn.)

NJCU (16-19) was red-hot at the plate and tallied 16 hits, tying their second-highest output of the season. The pair of wins extends NJCU's win streak over Lehman to seven and its overall record to 17-1. Meaghan Doyle (Hardwick, Mass./Quabbin Regional) (3-for-4), Jordan Mendolla (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) (3-for-4, 2 RBI), and Emma Grochowski (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) (3-for-3, 3 RBI) paced the team with three hits each. In the circle, Sophie Quackenbush (2-2) pitched a complete game with three strikeouts. Lehman (8-17) tallied five hits led by Perez (3-for-3, 1 RBI).

After a scoreless first inning, the Gothic Knights opened their scoring ledger with three runs in the bottom of the second. Doyle hit a one-out double to left center and was followed by a single down the left field line by Mendolla. Doyle, quick to notice Lehman not paying attention after a pitch, stole home to give NJCU its first run of the game. Mendolla didn't have to wait long as she crossed home for the first of three times via an RBI double by Grochowski. Grochowski came home at the very next at-bat, taking advantage of a defensive miscue at first.

NJCU kept the scoring going in the third when Mendolla hit a 2 RBI triple to center field to score both Doyle and Castro. A sacrifice fly by Grochowski capped the scoring for the Gothic Knights before McGuire flew out to end the inning. Cheyenn Fulton (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) hit her first homer of the season in the bottom of the fourth, giving NJCU a 7-1 lead over the Lightning. NJCU inched closer to the mercy rule, tallying another run courtesy of an RBI double down the left field line by Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) after Villanueva tallied her 100th career hit with a double to left field.

Lehman scored its second run of the game behind a Perez inside-the-park home run after it bounced off of the top of the fence and back into the field of play. NJCU responded during its next at-bat to keep its lead at seven before an RBI single by Grochowski ended the game.

Game 2: NJCU 11, Lehman 6

NJCU (17-19) tallied a robust 16 hits in game two but recorded four errors in the field. In the circle, Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) (8-5) picked up the eighth win of the season behind two strikeouts on 68 pitches. At the plate, Jaelynn Barrios (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) was an impressive 4-for-4 with 3 RBI, both of which led the Gothic Knights. Lehman (8-18) tallied six runs on eight hits and played clean softball in the field with no errors. Perez once again led the Lightning, going 3-for-4 while Espina finished 2-for-4 with a team-high 2 RBI.

Lehman was first to strike in the top of the first, using two hits and an error to take a 3-0 lead over the Gothic Knights. It took three innings, but NJCU leveled the game at three in the bottom of the third. Barrios recorded the first of her RBI with a single up the middle to score Elyze Lopez (Reseda, Calif./John F. Kennedy) who reached earlier on an infield single. With two runners on, Mendolla's bat proved to be the deciding factor as she hit a 2 RBI double to knot the game at three.

The Gothic Knights improved upon their scoring from the previous inning, plating five runs in the fourth to catapult themselves to an 8-3 lead. McGuire led off the inning with a single to right field before Lopez singled through the left side to begin the scoring. With two runners on, Barrios hit a 2 RBI double to right-center, scoring both Villanueva and Lopez. Not to be outdone, Doyle picked up her second homer of the season to plate two more runs and cap a five-run inning for the Gothic Knights.

Lehman cut into the lead in the fifth when they took advantage of two errors and three hits to plate three runs and bring themselves within striking distance. The Lightning's rally would end when NJCU scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to add a buffer to its lead before sitting Lehman down in order to end the game.
