Annandale-on-Hudson, NY | For the first time since 2011, the New Jersey City University women's soccer team has started the season 2-0 after a 3-1 win over Bard on Sunday morning. Sophia Veloso (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington), Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech), and Gabriella Cardona (Elizabeth, N.J./Alexander Hamilton) all picked up their first goal of the season, with Isabella Ramirez (Elmwood Park, N.J./Elmwood Park Memorial) collecting her first collegiate assist and Veloso scoring her first collegiate goal.

NJCU (2-0) out shot Bard (1-1) 21 (12) to 9 (6) with Alvarenga leading the charge with five shots. Between the pipes, Sophia Mannino (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) made four saves in 45 minutes of action before giving way to Lorraine Valenzuela (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) and Jessica Martin (Union, N.J./David Brearley).

Veloso opened the scoring for the Gothic Knights in the 5th minute off of a pass by Jess Digristina (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee). Later, Ramirez's shot nearly resulted in a goal and would have doubled both her season tally and NJCU's lead, but a Bard defender cleared the ball off the line to prevent the goal to remain one down. Bard leveled the game in the 23rd minute via a goal by Carina Cooke. NJCU regained the lead in short order as Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) tallied her first of the season and what would be the game-winning goal 50 seconds later. The offensive onslaught continued for the Gothic Knights with their third marker of the game in the 28th minute. Gabriella Cardona (Elizabeth, N.J./Alexander Hamilton) poked one around the keeper from Ramirez to put NJCU ahead 3-1.

NJCU's offense cooled down in the second stanza, tallying just six shots compared to 15 in the first. Collecting one of the first shots for the Gothic Knights in the second half was Aubrey Gulbin (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood), which forced a save by Bard's net minder, Thayden Hamilton-Howard. Bard was held to two shots in the second half, however, both missed the mark and sailed away from harm. With the lead in hand, the Gothic Knights secured the back line and carried their 3-1 lead to the final whistle.
