Celi Jr. Nets a Hattrick in 9-0 Win Over Medgar Evers

JERSEY CITY, NJ | Dom Celi Jr. (Newton, N.J./Newton) and the New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's soccer team toppled Medgar Evers, 9-0, in non-conference action at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.

The win over the Cougars improves NJCU's all-time record to 9-0 and the sixth straight shutout.

NJCU (3-4-2) recorded 26 shots in the win and put 12 of them on frame. Pacing the team was Tristan Bastos (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) and Maximilian Bzuikiewicz (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) with four each. In between the pipes Camilo Pascual Verdu and Dominic Cunha (Rahway, N.J./Rahway) each made one save as Medgar Evers (1-4-1) was held to two shots all game.

The Gothic Knights came out and dominated the game from the opening kick as they put pressure on Medgar Evers' net minder, Clirian Nunez, immediately with three shots in the opening 20 minutes. The first tally of the game came in the 22nd minute when Gerard Bocanegra (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) headed home a ricochet off of the crossbar from Kenneth Valladares (Union City, N.J./Union City). Just eight minutes later Celi Jr. tapped in a pass from Kevin Alves (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) for his first of three goals of the game to double NJCU's tally.

The goals continued to accumulate for NJCU as the first half continued on as Celi Jr. posted his second of the game. His second goal was a mirror image of the first as Brian Ferreira (Hillside, N.J./Scholar Athletic Leadership Academy) Jr., sent in a low cross for another easy tap in. Celi Jr., wasn't done there as another goal came in the 43rd off of another pass from Ferreira Jr. NJCU's offensive prowess was ended by the halftime whistle as NJCU carried a 4-0 lead into the break.

Bastos netted his second goal of the season off of a corner kick by Alves. Bastos jumped above his marker and headed home to goal to put NJCU ahead 5-0. It wouldn't take the Gothic Knights long to score their 6th and 7th markers by Valladares and Bzuikiewicz in the 59th and 63rd, respectively. Yehia Abdelmeged (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) scored a brace in quick succession, netting goals in the 66th and the 68th to finish the scoring for the Gothic Knights. Abdelmeged's goals were assisted by Ferreira Jr, his third of the game, and Dilan Ojeda (Newark, N.J./East Side).
