Women's Volleyball Drops NJAC Clash at Ramapo, 3-0

MAHWAH, NJ | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's volleyball team fell in a hard-fought NJAC matchup at Ramapo, dropping a 3-0 decision (25-21, 25-21, 26-24) on Tuesday night at the Bradley Center in Mahwah.

NJCU (10-2, 1-1 NJAC) hit .072 as a team with 33 kills, and 10 service aces. Kai Fitzpatrick (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough High School) led the Gothic Knights with a match-high 18 kills and added 4 service aces. Diane Pugay (Jersey City, N.J./Infinity Institute) contributed 6 kills, while Kiley Jurcisin (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) chipped in 2 kills. Rae Marrero (Medford, NY/Patchogue Medford) ran the offense with 27 assists and tallied 9 digs, and Elisabeth Brito (Jersey City, N.J./Union City) paced the defense with 12 digs. Brianna Melanson (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) chipped in for the Knights at the net with 2 total blocks. Ramapo (10-3, 2-0 NJAC) hit .221 with 33 kills; Valentina Palen led all players with 14 kills, Asya Akar added 11 kills, and Katie Bishop dished 28 assists. Emma Garcia recorded a team-high 17 digs for the Roadrunners.

The opening set was tightly contested early, with both teams trading points through the midway mark. NJCU rallied from an 8-12 deficit with a 4-0 spurt to tie the frame at 12, sparked by aggressive serving and a handful of clean kills. Ramapo countered, however, swinging momentum with a late 4-0 run that pushed the Roadrunners into the lead and ultimately closed out the set, 25-21.

Set two opened with Ramapo building separation behind an early 6-1 burst that forced NJCU to chase. The Gothic Knights answered with a 4-0 run, thanks to a kill by Fitzpatrick, to shrink the margin and keep the set competitive. The Roadrunners' offense regained traction and produced another key run in the middle portion of the set to pull away. Despite a late NJCU push, Ramapo again prevailed, 25-21.

The third set saw the most excitement, with the set being decided past the 25-point limit. NJCU surged in the middle portion of the frame, ripping off an 8-1 run, sparked by a kill from Pugay, to take a four-point cushion and looked poised to extend the match. Ramapo rallied, though, chipping away and trading blows down the stretch. With neither team giving ground, the Roadrunners found the extra plays late, getting clutch kills from Palen and Akar to finish a tense 26-24 set and clinch the sweep.
