Baseball Falls to Manhattanville in Non-Conference Twinbill

PURCHASE, N.Y. | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) baseball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Manhattanville on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: Manhattanville 13, NJCU 5

NJCU (2-3-1) scattered 13 hits, however, they were held to just five runs while suffering four errors. Collin Elam (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) (0-1) hurled 1.2 innings and allowed seven earned runs with six walks and a pair of strikeouts. Offensively, the Gothic Knights were led by Brenden Baeza (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) (2-for-3) and Brandon Piacenza (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) (2-for-3).

Manhattanville (5-2) used 11 hits to plate 13 runs while tallying just one error in the field. Ryan McCann (3-0) tossed five innings from the bump and struck out six batters while only allowing two earned runs. Jack Moeller finished perfect from the dish, going 4-for-4 with 5 RBI and three runs scored.

Moeller put the Valiants on the board early with a two-RBI homer over the center field wall before Anthony Peterson picked up an RBI after getting hit by a pitch. NJCU cut into the lead in the top of the second on a Travis Evernham (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) sacrifice bunt that scored Daniel Kapsch (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield), who reached earlier on a single to center field.

Manhattanville continued to pile on in the second, plating four more runs to stretch the lead to six. The first three Valiants batters all picked up hits to reach base and were followed by a pair of walks to ignite the scoring. The Gothic Knights turned two to pick up a pair of outs before getting the final batter to ground out. Once again, NJCU added a tally at the top of the frame on a Nick Vaughn (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) RBI single to score Baeza.

The Valiants tacked on another trio of runs in the bottom of the third before adding a run in each of the remaining innings to keep the Gothic Knights at bay. NJCU attempted to rally in the final two innings, plating three runs, but its offense ran out of steam as Manhattanville's early surge proved too much to overcome.

Game 2: Manhattanville 7, NJCU 6

NJCU (2-4-1) scored six runs on five hits and improved its fielding in the second game, tallying just one error. Dovid Solomon (Alon Shvut, Israel/Yeshiva Torah and Artzeinu) (0-1) pitched 1.2 innings and struck out two batters, and allowed four earned runs. Baeza picked up where he left off and led the Gothic Knights once again, going 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.

Manhattanville (6-2) scattered 9 hits in the win, led by a trio of batters who tallied two each. Jack Lally (1-0) pitched five innings with five strikeouts and no earned runs.

The Valiants, much like game one, jumped ahead early, plating four runs in the bottom of the first. NJCU, however, responded with five runs of its own. Evernham opened NJCU's scoring ledger with a single through the left side before Ray Gelok (Clifton, N.J./Passaic Tech) brought in another for the Gothic Knights. A heads-up play by Evernham allowed him to steal home to bring NJCU within one. Baeza lined one through the left side to score Jeremy Ricourt (Perth Amboy, N.J./JFK Memorial) and Gelok to briefly put the Gothic Knights ahead.

Manhattanville answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame and held NJCU to just one run for the remainder of the contest to complete the sweep.
