LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball team fell 5–0 to Delaware Valley University on Saturday, March 7, at the NMD Sports Complex.
The Gothic Knights (0-2) were outhit by the Aggies (1-0) 11–4, and NJCU committed two errors in the contest.
Delaware Valley broke the scoreless tie in the third inning with two singles and a triple to take a 2–0 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Aggies placed a runner on base with a hard-hit ball to shortstop. During an attempt to pick off the runner, NJCU overthrew the ball, allowing the runner from first to score and extend the lead to 4–0.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Aggies added another run. A single to left field put a runner on first, and she later stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly. In the following at-bat, a triple brought her home, making the score 5–0.
Sophomore
Emily Cammarata (Matawan , N.J./Matawan Regional) went 2-for-3 to lead NJCU at the plate, while freshman
Jennie Carmona (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) and junior
Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) each recorded a hit. Junior
Jaeda Figueroa (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) registered two sacrifice hits and a stolen base, while sophomore
Emma Hanlon (Highland, N.Y./Highland) added a sacrifice hit.
For the Aggies, Jillian Collins went 4-for-4, scoring two runs. Madison Donnelly finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored, while Madison Karns went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Angelina Bresnen was 1-for-2 with a run scored, and Amelia Funston also recorded a hit. Donnelly hit two triples, while Bresnen and Tori Backrath each recorded sacrifice flies. Collins also stole two bases.
Borza (0-1) started in the circle for NJCU, pitching 3.0 innings and allowing five hits and three runs while striking out two batters. Junior
Elyze Lopez (Reseda, Calif./John F. Kennedy) pitched the final three innings in relief, surrendering six hits and two runs.
Karns (1-0) threw a complete game for the Aggies, allowing four hits and striking out eight batters over seven innings.
