MAHWAH, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's and women's track & field programs competed in the 2023 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Outdoor Championships on Saturday, May 6, for day one of two on the campus of Ramapo College. Some headliners for the Gothic Knights included senior
Dave Etienne (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson), senior
Tyneil Jackson (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris), freshman Makhai Winston and senior
Shantel Worrell (Jersey City, N.J./Snyder).
On the men's, Etienne qualified for the finals in both events he competed in today. He came in eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.81, which is also eighth all-time in the program's outdoor record book. Then in the 400-meter dash, Etienne once again qualified for finals by posting a fourth-place time of 49.96. Jackson, being only the second Gothic Knight to compete in the decathlon, is currently holding his own. Out of the fifth competitors, Jackson is currently second through five of the weekend's 10 events. He won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.48 and also took the long jump with a leap of 6.03 meters — that was decathlon specific, as he also competed in the regular long jump event as well, placing 14th with a distance of 6.21m. Senior
Emmanuel Chinonso Abarah (Irvington, N.J./Irvington) had a strong day, as well, placing 15th in the 100m prelims with a PR of 11.33. He followed that up with a PR in the 200m, finishing in 14th with a time of 22.89. Winston came in 14th in the hammer throw, breaking his own program record with a toss of 37.89m.
For the NJCU women, senior
Lamya Young (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) PRed in the 100m prelims to place 16th with a time of 13.03. In the 200m prelims, junior
Ayriana Young (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) and sophomore
Nyla Boyd (Thomson, Ga./Thomson) notched PRs with times of 26.99 and 27.37, respectively. Sophomore
Ashley Adames (Jersey City, N.J./County Prep) also PRed in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:11.80 to place 13th. Worrell obliterated her own program record in the women's hammer, as well, with a 13th-place throw of 38.31m. Senior
Polina Agutina (Evaptoria, Ukraine/Number 6) placed 13th in the long jump at 4.78m, while freshman
Shyanne Anson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) PRed in the javelin with a toss of 25.68m.
