NEW YORK, NY…Senior shortstop SUSIE MATSUTANI (Gallup, NM/Gallup) was a combined 3-for-7 with four runs and a triple to break the all-time program record, and sophomore right-hander LACEY SKOWRONSKI (Bayonne, NJ/Holy Family Academy) remained undefeated on the mound in her collegiate career as New Jersey City University won game two of a non-conference doubleheader against John Jay College, 8-2, Tuesday at East River Park. NJCU owned a 5-0 lead in game one with six outs to go, before the Bloodhounds rallied for a 6-5 victory.

With the split, NJCU’s record remains .500 overall (5-5) while John Jay, which suffered its first loss of the year in game two, is 3-1. Matsutani now has 10 career triples, breaking the mark of nine achieved by two players, including Toni Salvatore (1990-93). She also moved into fifth place in school history with 113 hits and ninth in runs (75).

NJCU outhit the Bloodhounds, 9-7, as sophomore rightfielder CHRISTINA PROSPERO (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) was 3-for-4 with one run. Matsutani scored twice, going 1-for-4 and sophomore centerfielder TARA PERRUCCI (Wallington, NJ/Wallington) had two RBIs. But NJCU stranded 11 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the second and third innings.

John Jay junior catcher Marlenne Nunez (Bronx, NY/Bronx Leadership Academy) had two RBIs in a 2-for-4 effort, with a double.

Junior right-hander ANDREA DELUCREZIA (Belleville, NJ/St. Mary’s-Rutherford) took the loss (1-5), allowing five earned runs and seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY/Newtown) won for JJC, despite walking seven and striking out just two. She allowed four earned runs and nine hits.

NJCU opened a 2-0 lead in the first inning as sophomore designated player KRYSTINA KINGSTON (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) and freshman second baseman DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) had a double steal with Delfino scoring on the throw to second. Prospero had an RBI single to score Matsutani who singled and stole second.

NJCU added a third run in the third inning as Perrucci drew a two-out bases loaded walked. But for the second straight inning, NJCU left the bags full. The lead grew to 5-0 after six innings courtesy of an RBI single by Perrucci and an error that allowed Matsutani to reach base, then score.

JJC, which only had two base runners in the first five innings, scored four times in the sixth inning to cut it to 5-4, including an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s Girls) and a Nunez RBI double.

NJCU stranded two runners in the top of the seventh with a chance to extend the lead. In the bottom of the inning, Delucrezia struck out the first two batters, before walking the next two. Sophomore leftfielder Marina Gomez (Bronx, NY/DeWitt Clinton) singled to tie the game before Nunez singled home Bonici, who walked, with the walkoff winner.

******************GAME 2: New Jersey City University 8, John Jay 2******************
In game two, NJCU left no doubt about the final result, scoring three times in the first, and five more over the third and fourth innings, to seize an 8-2 win. The game ended after five innings due to darkness.

Matsutani led NJCU with a 2-for-3 performance, scoring twice with one RBI. Delfino added a 2-for-3 effort with two runs. NJCU had only six hits, but took advantage of six wild pitches, five walks and scored four unearned runs in all. Nunez was 2-for-3 for the Bloodhounds, with both RBIs.

Skowronski improved to 4-0 in five starts, allowing just two earned runs and five hits, while walking five and fanning three in 5.0 innings. Freshman Nina Chao (Woodside, NY/W.C. Bryant) lost, allowing eight runs with six hits, three strikeouts and five walks.

NJCU scored all the runs it would need in the top of the first. Delfino singled, stole second and scored on an RBI triple by Matsutani, who later came home on a wild pitch. Skowronski walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an error.

Sophomore third baseman CHRISTEN HALL (East Rutherford, NJ/Becton Regional) had an RBI single in the third, and Prospero tacked on a fifth run with an RBI groundout.

In the fourth, NJCU tagged on three more runs. Freshman leftfielder STEPHANIE GOMEZ (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) reached on an error, stole second, before scoring after consecutive wild pitches. Perrucci walked, Delfino singled, and each used heads up base running to score on a passed ball. John Jay scored its runs in the first and third innings on RBI singles by Nunez.

NJCU returns to action on Wednesday, March 26 at 3:30 p.m. when the Knights play their 2008 home opener with a non-conference doubleheader against Drew University.
