SINGLE-GAME, SINGLE-INNING HOMERUN RECORDS ARE GONE!
JERSEY CITY, NJ…Senior shortstop
SUSIE MATSUTANI (Gallup, NM/Gallup), the reigning NJAC and ECAC Player of the Week crushed two homeruns, including a grand slam in game one and sophomore first baseman/pitcher
LACEY SKOWRONSKI (Bayonne, NJ/Holy Family Academy) also went yard twice as
New Jersey City University lofted five homeruns in two games and swept Baruch College, 12-6 and 7-1, in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
NJCU (10-10) improved to 5-0 all-time against Baruch, outscoring the Bearcats 41-12 in that span. Baruch (11-8) had its eight-game winning streak snapped.
NJCU set single-game (4) and single-inning (3) records for homeruns in game one. NJCU as a team had more homeruns in game one than in any of the last six seasons. The Knights hit two homeruns as a team in 2002, two in 2003, four in 2004, three in 2005, three in 2006 and one in 2007. The four homeruns broke the single-game school record of three accomplished at Rutgers-Newark on April 18, 2000 and John Jay College on March 29, 2001.
Now with eight homeruns as a team this season, NJCU is behind only the 2000 (13) and 2001 (9) clubs for most homers in a season in program history.
Matsutani combined to go 6-for-7 with eight RBIs and four runs in the twinbill. She is 12-for-13 with 13 RBIs and 10 runs in her last four games against CUNYAC conference pitching and a combined 15-for-20 with 14 runs in six games against the league this year.
**************GAME 1: New Jersey City University 12, Baruch College 6**************
NJCU, in its 28th season of softball, set a single-inning program record when it cracked three in the sixth inning to break a 6-6 tie. Matsutani went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored and connected on a grand slam in the sixth inning—the ninth grand slam in NJCU history and the first since Anabel Rodriguez hit one at College of Saint Elizabeth, NJ on May 3, 2001. It was the first home grand slam since 2000.
Skowronski, who went back-to-back with Matsutani in the sixth inning, collected only the fifth multi-homer game in school history, tying the single-game mark of two last accomplished by Jen Barletta at John Jay College on March 29, 2001. Skowronski finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Matsutani and Skowronski had each only had one homerun in their careers prior to the game.
Freshman second baseman
DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) was 3-for-4 with three runs and stole two bases. She added a steal in game two, giving her 20 swipes (20-23) in 20 games. Sophomore rightfielder
CHRISTINA PROSPERO (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) was the first of three NJCU players to his a homer in the sixth inning—the first of her career.
Also for NJCU, freshman catcher
TAYLOR LANG (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) was 2-for-3 and sophomore third baseman
CHRISTEN HALL (East Rutherford, NJ/Becton Regional) was 2-for-4.
Baruch received a 3-for-3 effort with two runs from senior leftfielder Sonia Sendoya (Queens, NY/Murry Bergtraum) and three RBIs in a 2-for-4 performance from sophomore shortstop Melissa Pena (Queens, NY/W.C. Bryant). Senior first baseman Lillian Gaton (New York, NY/JFK) hit her third homer of the year.
Junior right-hander
ANDREA DELUCREZIA (Belleville, NJ/St. Mary’s-Rutherford) started the game before leaving with an injury while running the base paths and NJCU trailing 4-1. Freshman righty
CAITLIN LUNDBERG (Jersey City, NJ/St. Dominic Academy) entered and earned the win (2-0) by putting the Bearcats to sleep. In 5.0 innings, she allowed just two runs and six hits, with two Ks. Freshman
Lynn Schiano (Queens, NY/St. Francis Prep) took the loss for Baruch (2-5).
Baruch gained a 4-0 lead in the second inning on a three-run triple by Pena who then scored on a passed ball. NJCU got one back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double by Lang. Baruch added a single run on a solo homer by Gaton in the third. NJCU cut the deficit to 5-3 when two players scored on a passed ball.

NJCU took its first lead with five runs in the fifth. Matsutani had an RBI double, before Skowronski drilled a two-run homer to center. Baruch tied the contest in the top of the sixth when a dropped ball fell in for an unexpected fielder’s choice, allowing Sendoya, who doubled, to score from third.
But the rockets red glare was found on the NJCU bats in the bottom of the sixth as records fell out of the sky. Prospero led off with a homerun for what proved to be the winning RBI. Lungberg and Lang followed with singles and Delfino added a hit to load the bases. With two outs, Matsutani crushed a pitch which nearly hit the bleachers, more than 250 feet away in straightaway centerfield, for the historic grand slam. Skowronski then went back-to-back with a solo homerun for the 12-6 margin.
Skowronski’s homeruns in back-to-back inning are the first time on record in school history a player has hit homeruns in consecutive innings.
**************GAME 2: New Jersey City University 7, Baruch College 1**************
After crushed two homeruns with her bat in game one, Skowronski shut down the Bearcats with her arm in game two, tossing a complete-game two-hitter with eight strikeouts and only one walk. NJCU scored once in the first and again in the third, adding two in the fourth, before finishing off the sweep with three runs in the sixth inning.
Matsutani, who raised her season batting average to .517 in the doubleheader (30-58), was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs and her second homer of the day.
Hall was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and
Delfino added a 2-for-4 effort. Sophomore rightfielder
KRYSTINA KINGSTON (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) scored twice.
Freshman third baseman Ashley Brandow (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) was the lone Baruch offensive note, hitting a solo homerun, her third of the year, in the fourth inning. Freshman Andrea Tepfer (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner), who entered the game 7-1 on the season, took the loss. She struck out eight, but walked four and allowed seven earned runs and 13 hits.
Delfino led off the first inning with a triple and then stole home for her 20th swipe of the year. Matsutani, who singled in the third, scored the eventual winning run, when she scored on an RBI single by Hall.
In the fourth inning, Matsutani had a sacrifice fly for an RBI and Hall added an RBI single. In the sixth, Kingston walked, and Matsutani again hit a deep homerun over the center field fence for a 6-1 lead. Lang capped NJCU’s offense with an RBI single.
NJCU is back in action on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m. with a home New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader against Rowan University.
