NJCU, opening its 56th season of intercollegiate soccer, was facing both Trine, a school from Angola, Indiana, and a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAA) for the first time in program history.

Junior Tyler Krychkowski (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington), a converted field player this offseason, posted three saves and a shutout in his first career appearance in goal at any level of competitive soccer.

A defensive unit anchored by junior back Christopher Segovia (North Bergen, NJ/Memorial), sophomores Gabriel Freitas (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) and Hector Linares (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) and rookie Mohamed Elamin (Jersey City, NJ/Ferris), limited the Thunder to just one shot in the two overtime periods.

NJCU had a 5-1 margin in shots in the two extra periods and outshot Trine in both halves of regulation. Each team had seven corner kicks.

Trine senior Chris Stewart made 10 saves for the Thunder to keep it scoreless under heavy pressure, for his 11th career shutout.

Freshman forward Luis Cruz (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) put three of his four shots on net and All-New Jersey Athletic Conference junior midfielder Aboubacar Diawara (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) added three shots with two on target. Sophomore midfielder Davauni Brown (Newark, NJ/Newark Tech) also had four shots with three on goal.

"I thought we played very well," said third-year head coach Patrick Snyder. "A lot of young guys contributed. If it wasn't for an outstanding performance from their keeper, we would have come away a win. We defended very well as a team. Every player worked to get behind the ball and grind it out."

NJCU faces the United States Merchant Marine Academy on August 31 at 12 p.m. on day two of the tournament. USMMA blanked host CSI, 3-0, in the other first round tournament game.
