STATEN ISLAND, NY (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University freshman forward Lauren Bustamante (Rockaway, NJ/Butler) put away her first collegiate goal in the 59th minute to tie the game and the Gothic Knight defense limited host the College of Staten Island to just six shots on goal in 110 minutes as NJCU and CSI played to a 1-1 draw in the second round of the CSI Soccer Fall Classic on August 31.

NJCU (1-0-1) placed second overall in the tournament after an unblemished opening weekend. Illinois Tech won the tournament with a 2-0-0 mark. CSI fell to 0-1-1.

In a fairly even game where each team attempted just 12 shots and did not score in the first half, NJCU's 144:05 scoreless minutes streak to open the year ended early in the 55th minute when Samantha Wysokowski hit a shot into the top of the net off a through ball from Danielle Alexandrini.

But NJCU evened it four minutes later. Sophomore back Jubeth Buitrago (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) launched a free kick over the top of the CSI defense from her own half of the field. Bustamante was able to run onto the ball and tucked away a shot in a 1-on-1 with Dolphins keeper Kristy Colangelo. The assist was the first collegiate point for Buitrago.

Defensively, senior Brittany Hoffman (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) played the first 45 minutes in net, stopping two shots. Junior Cassie Lubonski (Edison, NJ/Edison) came on at the half and stopped three shots while logging the final 65 minutes at keeper. NJCU also had one team save. Victoria Donegan had three first half saves for CSI; Colangelo made five saves in 65 minutes.

NJCU is off until Monday, September 8 when it plays its home opener at 4 p.m. against Medgar Evers College at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
