Gothic Knight Insights: Interview with Marc Brown on the addition of James Frazier

PITMAN, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com)
| The New Jersey City University men's basketball program added a pair of mid-year newcomers to the program and one has already reaped rewards. Freshman small forward James Frazier (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth), whose addition to the program and scoring punch has been highly anticipated, was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week in just his first week of collegiate action, the league office announced on January 4.

Frazier, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound Criminal Justice major, did not disappoint in his debut, averaging 15.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists while shooting .417 (10-24) and 9-of-14 from the line. He had 30 points and 13 rebounds in his first two collegiate games in 48 reserve minutes in the CUNY Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, hosted by Lehman College in the Bronx on December 29-30.

In one of the wildest games in recent memory between two of the best public school collegiate men's programs in Division III, NJCU fell in double overtime to Buffalo State on December 29, 119-116. In that loss, Frazier came off the bench in his NCAA debut and scored 14 points (7-9 FT) with five rebounds in 24 minutes before fouling out. Trailing by six with 2:23 to play, Frazier turned a steal into a fast-break to cut the deficit to two, 90-88. He also contributed in the first overtime; Frazier made NJCU the first team to 100 with two foul shots that gave the Knights a three-point lead.

In a loss to Western Connecticut less than 24 hours after the taxing Buffalo State game, Frazier was a bright spot in the loss. His play off the bench included 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting in 24 minutes with eight rebounds—both NJCU game highs.

Frazier was a 2009 graduate of Elizabeth High School and a Union County All-Star where he was a two-sport standout in basketball and football.

He is the second Gothic Knight to be named NJAC Rookie of the Week this season. Freshman power forward/center Yuri Brutus (Roselle Park, NJ/Roselle Park) was honored on December 7 for week four.
