JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Senior midfielder
Koshane Marshall (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) of the men's soccer team has been named the 2020 recipient of the
Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Award. The NJCU Athletics Department announced the award on day 14 of The 2020 Gothics, during the Gothic Knights' virtual month-long awards series.
Â
The
Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Award is presented annually to a member of the men's or women's soccer programs who best exemplifies the following attributes for which former Jersey City State College men's soccer Hall-of-Fame coach
Robert L. McNulty was known: dedication to the sport of soccer, competitive spirit on the playing field, knowledge of the fundamentals of soccer and demonstration of leadership in the advancement and expansion of soccer.
McNulty passed away in 1992 and the award was established to honor his legacy in 1996. It is being awarded for the 23rd time this season.
Â
"The award could have been given to a number of different men's or women's soccer players this year but ultimately after consideration
Koshane Marshall (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) proved to be the most deserving," said fourth-year head coach
Joe Cullen. "I think this award represents having a high level of commitment and standards towards the game and how it should be treated. Anyone who knows Koshane and his work ethic would completely agree he is the person who brought the most to this program day in and day out. He is the type of guy you could
ALWAYS trust that he was going to bring a high level to compete in training and on game day, no matter what. Ko's work rate and commitment to the letters across his chest was unmatched and his presence will be missed."
Â
Marshall, a two-year player for the Gothic Knights (2017-19) after transferring from Moravian, earned Honorable Mention All-New Jersey Athletic Conference honors in the fall, was a one-time NJCU Men's Athlete of the Week selection this year and served as a 2019 team co-captain. He enjoyed his best season in a Gothic Knight uniform, helping NJCU register an 11-10-1 record, a school record 9-0-0 start to the season, and its first postseason appearance since 2012, eventually reaching the ECAC Division III Quarterfinals.Â
Â
While starting all 22 games for NJCU, he notched 15 total points on six goals and three assists and scored the game-winning goal in NJCU's 1-0 win over Marywood on August 31. He played 1,799 of a possible 2,003 minutes this year and 21 of his 40 shots were on goal (.525 shot percentage). He scored in five different games, netting a brace in a 3-2 win over Mount Saint Vincent.
Â
In all,
Marshall, a Global Business major, played in 41 games, starting 39 times, over two full seasons in Jersey City. He tallied 18 points on six goals and six assists in 3,243 minutes of action and 31 of his 56 career shots were on net (.554). He plans on attending graduate school next fall.
Â
McNulty, for whom the NJCU soccer field is named, was head coach of the Gothics from 1966-1977, and tallied 68 victories. Furthermore he is considered a building block of American Soccer for his work developing the sport on the national level. Currently the second winningest head coach in program history,
McNulty led the team to a 9-1-1 record in 1966, a 9-4-1 (4-1 NJSCAC) mark and conference title in 1968, and a 12-4-2 record and an ECAC appearance in 1975. The 1975 team had remained the standard for all future success of the program until the program reached national acclaim as a perennial power from 2000-08. A member of the U.S. Olympic Soccer team selection committee,
McNulty was inducted into the New Jersey Soccer Hall of Fame in 1995 and later the Lawrence R. Schiner
NJCU Athletics Hall of Fame posthumously in 2011.
