JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University, in conjunction with the New Jersey Athletic Conference, has made the difficult but ultimately necessary decision to suspend all intercollegiate sports competition for the Fall 2020 season, due to the continued impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The decision by the NJAC Presidents Council, in consultation with the NJAC Board of Athletic Administrators, was announced by the NJAC on July 28.
The suspension impacts nine fall sports sponsored by NJCU—men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis and women's volleyball. A decision on the impact of the winter sports season will be determined in the future.
NJCU, in collaboration with the NJAC, will pursue every avenue within the NCAA governance structure to explore sponsoring a competitive season for the fall sport student-athletes during the spring 2021 semester, as the institutional and conference leadership continuously monitors and reassesses the threat posed by the COVID-19 virus and its impact on a local, regional and national landscape.
Although competition has been suspended, the NJCU athletic department will continue its robust student-athlete leadership development programs while permitting sport-specific instruction and team-building exercises.
NJCU's talented and experienced coaching staff will continue to develop opportunities for expanded engagement opportunities outside of competition, which may include skill-building sessions and further training, culture-enhancing activities, intrasquad scrimmages and exhibition contests against neighboring institutions within NCAA parameters.
Meanwhile, NJCU's nationally-recognized holistic student development program, the Rising Knight Institute (RKI), will launch a new workshop
calendar of events entitled
The UknightED Series.
