JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's soccer team scored a season-high nine goals in the match-up against York College (N.Y.). York, able to put one goal on the scoreboard, traveled to NJCU's Robert L. McNulty Memorial Field at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex on Monday afternoon, Oct. 11.
The Gothic Knights (8-5-1) dominated possession in today's game against the Cardinals (1-6-1), ending in a 9-1 victory. NJCU also had a season-high 47 total shots, including 23 on goal, throughout the game. Individual records were broken as well, as freshman
Miguel Rodriguez (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) took seven shots to introduce new career-high. Right off the bat, Gothic Knight sophomores
Gabe Cruz (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) and
Maximo Vargas (Montevideo, Uruguay/The British Schools), freshman
Jaime Bimboza (Jersey City, N.J./William L. Dickinson) and senior
Luis Laing (Jersey City, N.J./William L. Dickinson) all had shot opportunities — Laing and Vargas took shots on goal, but they were saved by the Cardinals' goalkeeper. Following a missed shot by York in the eighth minute, junior
Christopher Castillo (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech), Bimboza and Laing fired shots back. Sophomore
Thiago Duarte (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) scored the first goal for the Gothic Knights following an assist from Laing in the 13th minute. Not long after, Jersey City's rookie
Jeff Sanchez (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) scored the second goal for the Green and Gold.
The Gothic Knights led 2-0 just 20 minutes into the game. Vargas, Duarte, Cruz and Sanchez all proceeded to take additional shots against the Cardinals, applying heavy pressure on the visitor's defense. In the 28th minute, junior
Ryan Evande (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) scored the third goal of the afternoon, assisted by Rodriguez. Senior captain
Nelson Segovia (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen), freshman
Edgar Porres (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne), Duarte and Evande each took shots on goal before Segovia pushed the next one through York's defense to score NJCU's fourth goal.
The fifth and six goals were scored during the last five minutes of the first half. Porres' was assisted by
Joey Velasquez (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) at the 41:17 mark, with Evande's goal following soon after — assisted by freshman Mauricio Julio.
NJCU rookie goalkeeper Diego del la Cruz was substituted in for senior goalkeeper
Aldahir Cazun (Jersey City, N.J./William L. Dickinson), who originally started in goal for Jerey City. York took the first shot of the second half, missing high. Sophomore
Aytor Valdez (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) and Laing followed with missed shot opportunities, but freshman
