MAHWAH, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's tennis, back and better than ever following a 22-year layoff for the program, dominated Ramapo College in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play today, Wednesday, April 14, by a score of 9-0. With the victory, the Gothic Knights secure the perfect NJAC regular season, as well as cement their status as the #1 overall seed in the NJAC Tournament, which takes place on May 7 (semifinals) and May 9 (finals).
NJCU (3-0, 3-0 NJAC) started off by winning all three doubles matches, first with freshmen and
reigning NJAC weekly honorees Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) and
Toni Cabot (Palma, Spain/IES Albuhaira), who did away with their Ramapo (0-1, 0-1 NJAC) opponents Chris Yip and Joshua Halperin at second doubles, 8-1. Third doubles was next to finish as another rookie duo,
Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) and
Gerard Loras (Tortosa, Spain/Col·legi Diocesà Sagrada Família) defeated Bobby Ciarletta and Yash Pandey of the Roadrunners, 8-2. First singles was the final match to close as junior
Theo Bourghelle (Lesquin, France/LaSalle Lille) and freshman
Jordi Julia (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Quirze del Valles) picked up the 8-3 win over Kenny Elliott and Matthew Doran to give NJCU the 3-0 lead.
Needing just two wins at the start of singles play to lock in the victory, Ley was the first to take down his Ramapo opponent in Ciarletta in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, at fifth singles. Julia finished off the win at third singles, 6-2, 6-0, over Doran to give his squad a 5-0 lead and their third official victory of the season. Loras was next and topped Pandey in straight scoreless sets at sixth single, followed by by Teynie's 6-1, 6-1, win at second singles over Yip. Cabot also defeated Halperin 6-1, 6-1, at fourth singles next. Finally, Bourghelle closed out the 9-0 victory with a straight set scoreless win at first singles.

NJCU returns to its home courts in West Orange, N.J., (West Orange Tennis Club) for its next match on Friday, April 16, starting at 11:30 a.m. The Gothic Knights face off wth Rowan College - Gloucester County in what will officially count as an exhibition, since NJCAA opponents do not count toward official NCAA Division III results or statistics.
