JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Following back-to-back New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) championships, as well as the first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament berth in program history last season, fifth-year head coach
Pat Devaney, Sr., has officially announced the New Jersey City University women's basketball team's 2022-23 schedule, which includes 25 regular-season games and two preseason scrimmages, as well as the hopes for a fourth-straight NJAC Tournament bid and a second-straight berth to NCAAs. Some highlights include NJCU squaring off with three Division I foes, including a scrimmage against Saint Peter's University in the
Battle of the Boulevard at Run Baby Run Arena and regular-season matchups at Monmouth University and Delaware State University. Moreover, the Gothic Knights are slated to face three opponents that ended 2021-22 ranked in the Top 10 of the final
D3hoops.com National Top 25 Poll of the season.
Things get started at the end of October when the Gothic Knights travel down Kennedy Boulevard for the preseason scrimmage with the
Peacocks on Oct. 30. NJCU will also host Division II
Nyack College for a home scrimmage at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC) on Saturday, Nov. 12. Sandwiched in between those matchups will be the regular-season opener for Jersey City as the squad travels Down the Shore to West Long Branch for a Thursday, Nov. 10, meeting with the Hawks of
Monmouth. Then, a week after their second scrimmage against Nyack, the Gothic Knights play their second regular-season game of the year on Monday, Nov. 21, in Dover, Del., against the Hornets of
Delaware State.
With inter-divisional play complete for the season, the Green and Gold next shift their focus to Division III — moreover NJAC — play. The Gothic Knights kickoff conference competition on Tuesday night, Nov. 22, at the JMAC when Montclair State University comes to town. Jersey City has won three of its last four against the Red Hawks, including last year's thrilling comeback victory in the NJAC Quarterfinal game in Montclair. NJCU then heads out to Wayne on Wednesday, Nov. 30, for an evening matchup with William Paterson University — the squad has won five straight against the Pioneers. Jersey City returns to the JMAC on Saturday, Dec. 3, for a
rematch of the 2021-22 NJAC Championship game against The College of New Jersey as the squad looks for its fifth win in its last six tries against the Lions.
A
marquee matchup awaits the Green and Gold next as they play host to
Amherst College on Sunday, Dec. 4, at the JMAC. The Mammoths ended 2021-22 ranked
#4 nationally by both
D3hoops.com and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). NJCU has faced Amherst every season — aside from the shortened 2020-21 campaign, which consisted of only NJAC play — since Devaney took over the program and last season, the Gothic Knights nearly took one off the Mammoths, falling 56-52 in Amherst, Mass. This will be the first time Amherst comes to the JMAC since December 2, 2018.
Back to NJAC play briefly go the Gothic Knights as they stay at the JMAC for a Wednesday evening, Dec. 7, matchup with Ramapo College. NJCU has won two of the last three against the Roadrunners, dropping a tough one to them in early February last season. The Knights then head to Union on Saturday, Dec. 10, to face Kean University, looking to regain their winning ways against the Cougars after dropping last season's two-game. This will be the first meeting of the season between
arguably the two best players in the NJAC as Kean's reigning Conference Player of the Year Shannon McCoy and NJCU's third-year guard and two-time First Team All-NJAC selection
Damaris Rodriguez (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) go head-to-head.
Following the 19-day Holiday Break, the Gothic Knights head down to Salem, Va., for the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic, hosted by Roanoke College. They first take on Washington College (Md.) on Thursday evening, Dec. 29, and face off with either the hosting Maroons or Eastern University on Friday evening, Dec. 30. Two days later, the squad returns to the JMAC for another
marquee non-conference Sunday battle, this time on New Year's Day against
Tufts University. The Jumbos ended 2021-22 ranked
#10 by D3hoops.com and
#11 by the WBCA — the two programs met in Medford, Mass., last January and NJCU once again played a top-ranked Boston-area school to the final buzzer but fell to Tufts, 65-61.
NJCU next hits a run of eight straight NJAC games, starting in Glassboro against Rowan University on Wednesday, Jan. 4. After not beating the Profs since a sweep in the 2013-14 season, Jersey City took two-of-three against Rowan last season, including a big win in South Jersey in the NJAC Semifinal. The Gothic Knights then return to the JMAC for a Saturday, Jan. 7, meeting with Rutgers-Newark, looking to make it four straight against the Scarlet Raiders. Day later, NJCU heads down to Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, Jan. 11, and looks to continue its winning streak against the Scarlet Raptors. Back to Jersey City goes the Gothic Knights as Stockton University comes to town on Saturday, Jan. 14 — NJCU has won six of the last eight against the Ospreys, including four straight.
Jersey City hits the road as the squad makes its way around the NJAC for the second time this season, starting in Montclair against the Red Hawks on Wednesday, Jan. 18, followed on Saturday, Jan. 21, with a trip down to Ewing against TCNJ. NJCU comes back to the JMAC and hosts William Paterson on Wednesday, Jan. 25, before Kean comes back to town for a Saturday, Jan. 28, matchup. Finally, the Gothic Knights have their last non-NJAC
marquee clash of the regular-season when
Christopher Newport University comes to Coach Charlie Brown Court on Sunday, Jan. 29, for the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Captains ended 2021-22 ranked
#8 Nationally by D3hoops.com and
#7 by the WBCA.
Remaining on the schedule for NJCU is five more regular-season NJAC games. First, the squad travels up to Mahwah for a Wednesday, Feb. 1, clash with Ramapo, followed by a Saturday, Feb. 4, meeting with the Scarlet Raiders in Newark. The Gothic Knights return to the JMAC for a Wednesday, Feb. 8, game against Rowan before their road finale in Galloway against Stockton on Saturday, Feb. 11. The regular-season comes to a close at the JMAC on Wednesday, Feb. 15, against Rutgers-Camden.
The 2022-23 NJAC Tournament is scheduled for Feb. 18-25 and the NCAA Division III Tournament takes place from March 3-18.
