ROB SUMNER EXTENDS HITTING STREAK TO 16 GAMES, AVERAGE TO .540

JERSEY CITY, NJ…Freshman JOSUE MARTINEZ (Bronx, NY/Walton (NY)) sliced a two-out pinch-hit two-run game-winning walkoff double down the right field line in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap a six-run rally in the final four innings as New Jersey City University registered a 10-9 come-from-behind win over College of Mount Saint Vincent, in a non-conference baseball game at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.

NJCU (6-7) won despite its pitching staff walking 14 batters—none in the final three innings. Mount Saint Vincent (2-6) dropped its third straight game. NJCU leads the all-time series, 3-0. The Dolphins stranded 12 runners on base. There were no errors in the game.

NJCU junior centerfielder ROB SUMNER (Union, NJ/Union) went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases (12th of the year), two runs, and one RBI, extending his hitting streak to 16 games dating to the end of last season and his season batting average to .540 (27-50).

Freshman left-hander JONATHAN GOMEZ (Jersey City, NJ/St. Mary’s-Jersey City) earned the win in relief—the first victory of his career (1-1)—by tossing 3.1 innings of no-hit baseball. He did not allow a run, fanned three, and walked two.

Also for NJCU, freshman catcher ALEX MENA (North Bergen, NJ/Hudson Catholic) went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run, while junior rightfielder ANTHONY MACKOW (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) went 2-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases.

Junior shortstop JOSE FULGENCIO (Bronx, NY/San Rafael, Dominican Republic) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and scored the game-winning run after being intentionally walked in the ninth. Junior designated hitter RUBEN BORGES (Union, NJ/Union) was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

In defeat for the Dolphins, sophomore third baseman Josh Cuozzo (Westbury, NY/Clarke) had two of CMSV’s six hits (2-for-6), adding two RBIs. Freshman rightfielder Joe Blackford (Stewartsville, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) and sophomore shortstop Mike Ruckdaschel (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) each had two RBIs. Junior catcher Vincent Prestopino (Bronx, NY/Salesian) scored three times while junior designated hitter Tanner Munroe (Milford, CT/Foran) scored twice.

NJCU opened a 3-0 first inning lead on a Borges sacrifice fly, Mena RBI double, and Fulgencio RBI single, and led 4-1 after an RBI single by Sumner in the second inning.

From there, the Dolphins scored eight straight runs over the next four innings to pull ahead 9-4. Cuozzo had a two-run single up the middle in the fourth to tie the game, before freshman centerfielder Anthony Brestolli (Wyckoff, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) put the Dolphins ahead with a fifth inning single. After the first two batters were retired in the sixth inning, CMSV scored four times off just two hits, as the Knights allowed five walks. A two-run single by Ruckdaschel made it 8-4, before a bases-loaded walk by Blackford extended the margin to 9-4.

NJCU added a single-run in the sixth on an RBI single by junior leftfielder MICHAEL McCORMICK (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) and tacked on three more tallies in the seventh to claw back to within one run, at 9-8. In the seventh, Sumner walked, Mackow singled, and the tandem swiped second and third, setting up RBI singles by Borges and Mena. Later, Fulgencio grounded out to score Borges.

Gomez retired the final 10 Dolphins he faced, including the side in order in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. NJCU did not threaten in the eighth inning, setting up the decisive ninth.

With one out, Mena’s grounder to shortstop took a wicked hop, resulting in an infield single, and freshman EDDIE GONZALO (Union City, NJ/Union Hill) pinch ran, before stealing second base. After NJCU was struck out for the second time in the inning, Fulgencio received the intentional pass. On the first pitch he saw, Martinez lined a shot down the right field line, scoring Gonzalo and Fulgencio with the winning runs.

Junior Jon O’Leary (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) suffered the loss (0-3) in relief, allowing two runs and three hits, with three strikeouts and one walk in 2.1 innings.

NJCU returns to action on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. when it faces SUNY-Farmingdale in a non-conference doubleheader in Farmingdale, NY.
