*********GAME 1: RAMAPO COLLEGE 15, NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY 1*********
In the opener, sophomore right-hander Tim Hannes (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highlands) lost a perfect game with one out in the sixth inning but earned the win while pitching a gem. Improving to 3-2 overall, he allowed four hits and one run with three strikeouts and no walks in eight innings.
Offensively, Ramapo put up 26 hits—the most by an opponent this season—and scored in every inning except the sixth.
Sophomore third baseman Justin Leon (New City, NJ/Clarkstown North) led seven Ramapo players with multiple hits in the opener, going 4-for-6 with four runs and four RBIs. Senior catcher Tim Gaven (Union, NJ/Union) was 3-for-3 with a run and RBI and junior first baseman Joey Cacchiola (Union, NJ/Union) scored twice and was 2-for-5, including his second homer of the season.
Also for RCNJ, sophomore centerfielder Joseph Somma (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) and senior designated hitter David Deredita (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and freshman rightfielder Daniel Mauriello (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodburry) came off the bench to finish 3-for-4 with two runs and his first three career extra base hits—two triples and a double. Freshman shortstop Kevin Knox (Matawan, NJ/Matawan) was 2-for-2 with two RBIs in a reserve role.
In defeat, sophomore third baseman
MICHAEL FIORENTINO (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) was 2-for-4 while freshman second baseman
ROB GONZALEZ (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) drove in NJCU's lone run but had his 12-game hitting streak snapped.
Junior righty
STEPHEN MONTALBANO (North Brunswick, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) took the loss (2-5), allowing six runs and 10 hits in 3.0 innings with three strikeouts and one walk.
The Roadrunners broke open the game in the third inning. Leading 2-0, RCNJ scored four times on five hits and Leon had the biggest blow with a two-run double that made it 4-0. RCNJ would later add three runs in the fifth and eighth innings.
*********GAME 2: RAMAPO COLLEGE 11, NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY 6*********
In game two, NJCU outhit the Roadrunners, 14-12, and cut it to 4-3 after eight innings but Ramapo prevented any chance at another Gothic Knight comeback this season by scoring seven times in the top of the ninth, and held on for the 11-6 decision.
For NJCU, senior centerfielder
MARK HOYER (Irvine, CA/Woodbridge-CA) was 3-for-5 and sophomore shortstop/pitcher
TOM BURKE (Edison, NJ/Immaculata) had a two-run single in the eighth inning that made it a one-run game, as he finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs at the plate.
Gonzalez and
Fiorentino were each 2-for-5 with two runs.
Gonzalez reached the 50-hit plateau for the season, marking only the 18
th time that has happened in program history. Junior designated hitter/third baseman
ALEX MENA (North Bergen, NJ/Hudson Catholic) finished 2-for-4 and freshman right fielder
JOE STEINBERGER (San Diego, CA/San Diego) drove in two RBIs.
RCNJ received a 4-for-5 performance with a run and RBI from sophomore catcher Michael McGuckin (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne). Cacchiola was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and two sac flies.
Leon, who finished the doubleheader hitting a combined 6-for-10 with six runs and five RBIs, was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Freshman rightfielder Joseph Della Serra (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) and junior pinch hitter John McGuckin (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) each added two RBIs; senior second baseman Gino Gallagher (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) scored twice.
Freshman righty Matt Jenisch (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) earned his first collegiate win (1-0). In 6.2 innings, he allowed only six hits and no runs, with three strikeouts and one walk. RCNJ used four other relief pitchers to finish the contest.
Junior left-hander
CHRIS SMITH (Linden, NJ/Rahway) pitched well in defeat. He allowed three earned runs and only five hits in 7.0 innings, with six strikeouts and three walks.
Ramapo took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Cacchiola sac fly then scored three more in the fourth for a 4-0 lead. Leon had an RBI double in the inning and Della Serra added an RBI groundout before a fourth run came in on an error.
After NJCU threatened in the seventh, only to leave the bases loaded, the Knights cut it to 4-3 with three runs in the eighth. Senior catcher
KRISTOPHER BRUS (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) drove in the first run before
Burke had a bases-loaded two-run single up the middle.
But in the ninth, NJCU junior closer
JOSEPH TARALLO (South Amboy, NJ/Hoffman) came into a non-save situation and had a rare rough outing, allowing seven runs on four hits, against three walks and one K in two-thirds of an inning.
Somma had an RBI single and
Cacchiola drove in two more runs with a single for a 7-3 lead.
Della Serra walked with the bases loaded.
John McGuckin had a two-run single before
Michael McGuckin added the 11
th run on an RBI single.
In the bottom of the ninth, NJCU scored three times in an attempt to rally. Loading the bases with one out, Hoyer had an RBI single and Steinberger followed with a two-run single up the middle, before NJCU left two men stranded to end the game.
