#GothicRewind—NJCU Falls to WheatonOn Monday, NJCU fell behind early, 19-0 and bounced back to draw within striking distance at the end of the third quarter before Wheaton outscored NJCU 20-5 in the fourth period and won a non-conference matchup, 75-50, in the first meeting between the schools. The loss spoiled a career-effort for senior forward
Deseree Johnson (Red Bank, NJ/Monmouth Regional) who was the game's dominant player with a double-double of 29 points and 11 rebounds.
Â
Dominant DesThe loss to Wheaton was the best-ever performance for
Deseree Johnson, scoring a career-high 29 points while notching her sixth career double-double.
Johnson scored more than half of NJCU's points—accounting for 58 percent of its offensive output—and scored the most points by a Gothic Knight in more than a year. It was her second career 20-point performance, nearly double her previous season scoring high (16), and one point shy of the most scored by a New Jersey Athletic Conference player this season.
Â
Overall,
Johnson shot 12-of-26 and 5-of-12 from three-point range to notch 29 points without attempting a free throw. She added 11 rebounds (seven defensive), three assists and two steals in 39 minutes—coming out only in the final minute of the game. It was her 21st career double-digit scoring effort, her sixth in seven games this year and her third double-double of the season.
Â
She is currently averaging 14.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.1 assists per game and has scored in double figures in six of seven games for NJCU. She is seventh in the league in scoring and eighth in rebounding.
Â
Team TrendsNJCU has forced 22.33 turnovers per game which ranks 73rd in Division III. NJCU is 0-6 when trailing at halftime this year and at the start of the fourth quarter. NJCU has not shot better than 41.5 percent in a game this season and have been outshot in five of seven games (0-5 when that occurs). When an opponent has more points off turnovers than NJCU or scores 60 or more points, the Knights are 0-6.
