HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The New Jersey City University men's and women's tennis team each competed in duals on Wednesday, March 8, as part of the Sprint Tennis Fest and unfortunately, each squad was defeated. The men fell behind early in doubles, losing all three, but nearly came back with four wins at singles in the 5-4 loss to Eastern Nazarene College. The women lost to Sweet Briar College, 8-1.
The NJCU men (3-3) got started earlier in the day and as mentioned, fell to the Lions (4-4) in all three doubles matches and trailed 3-0 heading into singles play. Junior
Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) made quick work of his opponent at first singles (6-1, 6-0). Junior
Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) and sophomore
Joaquin Pluis (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Santa Felicitas) each one three-set battles at second and fifth singles, respectively, as well. The other singles win came from rookie
Pedro Caro-Accino Roca (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain/British School of Gran Canaria) at third singles (6-3, 7-5).
The Gothic Knight women (3-2) were close at first doubles, but fell 8-5, and also dropped second and third doubles 8-1 each. Sophomore
Vanshita Malhotra (Barwala, India/DAV Model School) had a high-scoring battle at third singles, but fell in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 7-10). Rookie
Sophia Jurina (Munich, Germany/Carl-Spitzweg-Gymnasium) had a good match at fourth singles but fell, as well (6-3, 7-5). Jersey City's win came at second singles from senior
Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College), who won via a three-set comeback after dropping the first (2-6, 6-3, 10-5).

The NJCU men are back in action on Thursday afternoon, March 9, at 12:30 p.m. against Grace College at the Shipyard Racquet Club, while the women play their third and final match down in Hilton Head at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center on Friday, March 10, at 12:00 p.m. against Berry College.
