Both Tennis Teams Drop Duals in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The New Jersey City University men's and women's tennis team each competed in duals on Wednesday, March 8, as part of the Sprint Tennis Fest and unfortunately, each squad was defeated. The men fell behind early in doubles, losing all three, but nearly came back with four wins at singles in the 5-4 loss to Eastern Nazarene College. The women lost to Sweet Briar College, 8-1.

The NJCU men (3-3) got started earlier in the day and as mentioned, fell to the Lions (4-4) in all three doubles matches and trailed 3-0 heading into singles play. Junior Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) made quick work of his opponent at first singles (6-1, 6-0). Junior Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) and sophomore Joaquin Pluis (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Santa Felicitas) each one three-set battles at second and fifth singles, respectively, as well. The other singles win came from rookie Pedro Caro-Accino Roca (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain/British School of Gran Canaria) at third singles (6-3, 7-5).

The Gothic Knight women (3-2) were close at first doubles, but fell 8-5, and also dropped second and third doubles 8-1 each. Sophomore Vanshita Malhotra (Barwala, India/DAV Model School) had a high-scoring battle at third singles, but fell in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 7-10). Rookie Sophia Jurina (Munich, Germany/Carl-Spitzweg-Gymnasium) had a good match at fourth singles but fell, as well (6-3, 7-5). Jersey City's win came at second singles from senior Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College), who won via a three-set comeback after dropping the first (2-6, 6-3, 10-5).
