WAYNE, NJ…New Jersey City University led 2-1 after the top of the second inning, before William Paterson University took the lead for good with five runs in the second, and tacked on nine in the fourth and seventh in the sixth, notching a 24-8 win over the Gothic Knights in a New Jersey Athletic Conference slugfest on April 9 at Pioneer Park.
NJCU (12-16-1, 2-6 NJAC) managed 13 hits in the loss while the Pioneers (13-12, 5-3 NJAC) put up at least 10 runs in a game for the 10th time this season and had at least 15 runs for the fourth time this year WPU has scored 15 or more runs in three of its first eight NJAC games this season.
In defeat, rookie second baseman
ROB GONZALEZ (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) posted his 15
th multiple hit game of the year and extended his hitting streak to 10 straight, posting a 3-for-5 effort with four of NJCU's eight runs out of the leadoff spot. He added his 14
th stolen base of the year.
Senior catcher
KRISTOPHER BRUS (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) had three RBIs, going 1-for-4 with a run while senior left fielder
JORGE PARDO (West New York, NJ/Memorial) was 3-for-4 with a run and RBI. Freshman right fielder/first baseman
JOE STEINBERGER (San Diego, CA/San Diego) finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and senior center fielder
MARK HOYER (Irvine, CA/Woodbridge (CA) was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
The Pioneer attack was paced by senior centerfielder John Elia (Emerson, NJ/Pascack Valley) who was 4-for-4 with four runs, three RBIs and his seventh homerun of the year. WPU hit three round trippers in the game and had nine extra base hits. Junior second baseman Miguel Lugo (Jersey City, NJ/St. Mary's) had two triples, four runs and four RBIs in a 3-for-5 showing and senior catcher Don Hays (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) had four RBIs, going 3-for-5 with two runs.
Also for, WPU, junior right fielder Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, NJ/Northern Highlands) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and one run and senior third baseman Will Courter (Roseland, NJ/West Essex) provided three RBIs and three runs, collecting a homerun.
Sophomore Frank Franco (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) had a pinch-hit homerun, his second of the season, as WPU swept the season series, having won in Jersey City, 8-4, on March 27. NJCU added two runs in the fifth inning and three in the ninth, but couldn't rally.
