KENILWORTH, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University freshman
Tyler Young (Toms River, NJ/Celebration (Fla.)) holed a chip shot from 30 yards on the par-5 18th to notch the first eagle in the five-year history of the Gothic Knight men's golf program as NJCU opened its spring schedule on March 29 on NJCU's home Galloping Hill Golf Course.
In a tri-match with William Paterson University and Yeshiva University, WP placed first with a 317 round of +33 with Yeshiva shooting 355 (+71). NJCU finished at 414 (+130). The par-71 course measured 6,273 yards on the blue tees—3,227 yards on the par 36 front nine and 3,046 yards coming in (par 35).
Young had his best score as a Gothic Knight, placing 7th overall with a +13 round of 84 (44-40).
Young, after struggling with triple bogies on the first and third holes, recovered to play quality golf on the final 15 holes. He birdied the 350-yard par-four fourth and 280-yard par-four 17th holes and finished with six other pars on the day before stepping to the tee on the 492-yard, par-5 18th hole.
Young crushed his drive and left his second shot just 30 yards shy of the green on the left side of the fairway. From there, he chipped his third shot over the bunker and right at the pin for his first-ever eagle as a golfer.
First-year head coach
Brian Ferrante said: "For being as cold as it was and this early in the season, I was proud he was able to put together a round like this. He struggled off the tee in the beginning but really put it together later in the round."
William Paterson placed three of the top five in the 15-man field with
Christian Foti claiming individual medalist honors with a +5 round of 76 (40-36). By shooting one-over on the back nine, including birdies on the 16th and 18th holes and 10 other pars, he edged Yeshiva's
Max Shulman by one stroke for first place.
Shulman shot a +6 round of 77 (39-38) with 10 pars and a birdie on the 18th. WP's
James Nuzzo carded a +7 round of 78 (39-39) for third place.
