Clay is recognized for his versatility in several sports. A standout performer in tennis, he played both singles and doubles during his four year career. In his senior year, Clay was undefeated in 1st singles during regular season NJSCAC competition and was named to the All-Conference first team. He also played soccer for three years and earned first team All-NJSCAC honors in 1970. Clay was one of the founders and president of the Gothic Soccer Club, a student organization whose support enabled JCSC to participate in indoor tournaments during the non-traditional season. Former Gothic soccer coach Bob McNulty described Clay as “one of the most tenacious and spirited players” he ever coached at JCSC. Clay also was a member of the fencing team for one season.
