Clay is recognized for his versatility in several sports. A standout performer in tennis, he played both singles and doubles during his four year career. In his senior year, Clay was undefeated in 1^st singles during regular season NJSCAC competition and was named to the All-Conference first team. He also played soccer for three years and earned first team All-NJSCAC honors in 1970. Clay was one of the founders and president of the Gothic Soccer Club, a student organization whose support enabled JCSC to participate in indoor tournaments during the non-traditional season. Former Gothic soccer coach Bob McNulty described Clay as “one of the most tenacious and spirited players” he ever coached at JCSC. Clay also was a member of the fencing team for one season.
