Charles, a premier hurdler for the Gothics under Coach Tom Gerrity, first gained attention with a victory in the 120-yard high hurdles and second in the 120-yard low hurdles in the 1962 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics District 31 Championships.

In 1963, he won the 120-yard high hurdles, tying his own record of 15.4 seconds, in the Collegiate Track Conference Outdoor Championships and was third in the same event in the NAIA District 31 Championships.

In 1964, Bennett won the CTC indoor 60-yard high hurdles. In the same year, he finished third in the New Jersey College and University meet in the 120-yard high hurdles despite running a school record 14.9 seconds.

Additionally, Charles competed for three years in Epee for the men’s fencing team.
