A very aggressive guard and outstanding rebounder, Fred was selected to the 1940 All-County College Basketball team (Jersey City State, St. Peter’s College, Hudson College, Stevens Institute of Technology, John Marshall School of Law) and the 1939 and 1940 All-State Teacher’s College Conference teams (Jersey City State, Paterson State, Newark State, Glassboro State, Montclair State, and Trenton State). Fred was one of the leading scorers in the county during his playing days, ranking in the top five scorers in both 1939 and 1940.  Fred scored the winning basket to give Jersey City State an upset victory over St. Peter’s College in 1938.  He was a four-year standout, under Hall of Famer Les Fries. He captained the basketball team during the 1939-1940 season. Fred received his varsity basketball letter in 1939 and was also a Golden Gloves boxer, winning the Citizens Military Training Corps, welterweight championship in 1939.
