Newt played four years varsity basketball, two years baseball and two years tennis. During his career, he led the Gothics to their first three winning seasons in basketball. As a freshman, he scored 19 points against Montclair State – the highest point total among county collegians that season. In his junior year, he scored a career high 27 points against Newark Teachers. Hydell introduced the hook shot to Jersey City State basketball fans and was regarded as one of the best shooters of his time. He was the leading career collegiate scorer of his era in the county with 603 points.

 On the baseball field, he stole both third and home against Paterson Teachers to win the first baseball game in the History of JCTC in 1936. Additionally, Newt played 5th singles and 2nd doubles on the 1938 and 1939 men’s tennis team.
