Billy is regarded by many as the greatest wide-receiver in Gothic history. He still holds seven school records including most T.D. passes caught in a career (17); most passes caught in a single game (12); most passes caught in a single season (61); most passes caught in a career (117); most yardage gained on pass receptions – single game (169), single season (852), and career (1,747). He is currently tied with two other players for most T.D. passes caught in a season (6). Byrne was a first team Eastern College Athletic Conference selection in 1973. Additionally, he was selected to the New Jersey State College Athletic Conference first team in 1970, 1972 and 1973 to rank as one of the most honored Gothic football players of all time.

In 1973, Byrne finished fourth nationally in NCAA Division III receiving statistics with 61 catches, 852 yards, 6 T.D.’s and 6.1 catches per game.

During his four years, Gothic teams won 29 games and lost only 7.
