After attending Upsala College for two years and serving in the armed forces, Sess returned to Jersey City State where he was a two year starter for the Gothics earning All- Conference First Team honors in both years.

An outstanding rebounder, Sess led the 1961 Jersey City State team to a 22-4 record – and the school’s first conference championship. His 32 rebounds against Morgan State is still a Gothic single game record. He was also a member of the track team competing in both the high jump and high hurdles.
