Coach Gelston is credited with the winning basketball tradition at Jersey City State. During his eight year tenure, Gothic teams posted a 126-62 (.670) overall record and a 56-24 (.700) New Jersey State College Athletic Conference record. His teams won conference titles in 1961, 1964, and 1965. They also won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics District 31 Christmas Tournament in 1962 and the NAIA District 31 post-season championship in 1964 with two spectacular wins over Maryland State (55-56) and Plattsburgh State (62-61). He produced eleven first team and four second team all conference selections. Tow of Ollie’s former players, present Jersey City State College head coach, Charles Brown and teammate Ben O’Neal, are currently enshrined in the Gothic Hall of Fame.

Since 1967, Gelston has served very successfully at Montclair State College where his teams have won NJSCAC titles in 1968-71, 1981 and 1982, as well as the NCAA Division II Eastern Regional Championship in 1969. Entering the 1982-83 season Coach Gelston was ranked fifth in all-time victories at NCAA Division III colleges with 343. He presently has 359 career victories.
