Many consider Ray as the greatest track performer in Jersey City State history. Sernitsky won many first place honors in the 60 and 120 yard high hurdles, his specialties during his brilliant four year career. He won the Collegiate Track Conference Indoor 60 yard high hurdles in both 1965 and 1966 in times of 7.8 and 7.7 respectively. He won the CTC outdoor 120 yard high hurdles in both 1965 and 1966 in times of 14.9 (a meet record) and 15.0 respectively. He also finished first in the prestigious NAIA District 31-120 yard high hurdles in 1964 in a time of 15.2. Perhaps, Ray’s greatest victories came in the New Jersey College and University Track Meet, when he won the 120-yard high hurdles in both 1965 and 1966. In 1965 he set a meet record of 14.4 which was not broken until 1973. Ray topped his brilliant career by being named to the 27-man Metro A.A.U. Team to visit Puerto Rico. There he finished second in the 110 meter high hurdles behind noted track star Russ Rogers.
